A non sequitur

A slogan I read a lot on Weight Watchers message boards, and one that I've actually used a time or two goes something like, "fall down 8 times, get up 9." There are as many variations on that theme as there are numbers.

Problem is, it's nonsense. You can't get up more times than you fall down. You can only get up as many times as you fall down; to do more is an impossibility. You can't get up from being up, unless of course you can fly. And if you can fly, it's probably a dream, or you're a super hero, in which case you have a whole different set of problems.

In order to win, achieve your goal, lose weight, be a champion, whatever, what you actually have to do is get up every time you fall down, not more than you fall but every time. Don't stay down. Unless you're being shot at, in which case, stay down as low to the ground as you can and hide behind something bigger than you.
