My $17.95 mistake

Now, as mistakes go, I've made ones that were more costly (my 1st post high school boyfriend, my 1st marriage, etc., come screaming to the forefront of my mind), but this one just annoys the shit out of me.

As we all know by now, I've been knitting a lot lately. I like to knit for a couple of reasons. First off, you end up with something to show for your activity, and second, it's hard to eat crap while you're knitting, so it's actually a pretty effective weight loss tool. Feel like eating a cookie? Make a hat instead. It's working out OK, and I have a lot of hats (Sharon, yours are coming, I've made 3 of them already).

On Saturday, Lindsay (AKA Shnoodle) accompanied me to the LYS (local yarn shop) in downtown Olympia. I was on the hunt for a particular circular knitting needle (size 10.5, 40 inches long) because I wanted to try magic loop and knitting a hat in the round. Found the needle, purchased it without checking the price first (bad Connie) and without checking the return policy for the store.

This is the needle. It was $17.95 plus tax (which in Thurston County, Washington is 8.6 odd percent). I got it home, cast on a few stitches, and realized that I had made a terrible mistake. This is a bamboo needle, and I absolutely positively fucking hate the way it feels in my hands. I know that bamboo needles are all the rage with the cool kids, but they're not for me. I don't like the way the yarn caught on the needles (I like slippy things), the cord was too stiff and kinked for magic loop to work right (which I understand in concept, but I need better equipment to master), and the joins were not smooth at all, and they snagged the hell out of the yarn. And yes it was a semi-splitty yarn, but my plastic coated metal needles don't have nearly the same issues.

So I think, OK, lesson learned. Bamboo and this particular brand of needle (addi Natura) is not for me. I saved the receipt, and went back to the LYS today. Only to discover that they don't take needles in return because of "hygiene" issues. I almost looked at the people and said, "I neither put it in my mouth or up my ass," but I held back. Apparently if the needle had been damaged or defective, they would have taken it back, but I'm willing to bet only for store credit which I don't want right now. What I want is my $17.95 plus tax back.

Anyone want to buy my mistake?

Um...pass.

I'm sorry about the no return policy. It sounds like a crock of sh*t to me. I would have stood there, called them on their idiocy and suggested they could either take back the needles or risk me shopping for supplies at another LYS.

Suuucks.

The sad thing is that in my local area, there's not another LYS. But, they don't stock a single thing that I can't get on the internet, generally cheaper and mostly without having to pay the sales tax. I was trying to patronize a local business, and while I blame myself for not checking the return policy, I still won't be making any purchases from there in the forseeable future, if ever again.

Which is too bad really, for me and for the concept of patronizing local business in general.
