So, mom has a roommate, Barb. Barb splits her time between "The Compound of Estrogenia" and the beach. The COE represents my house and mom's house (next door) where there are no boys as permanent residents. Even all the cats are female, and any other animals that might be introduced will also be female. No one watches ESPN, things rarely blow up on the TV, boy smells do not emanate . . . But I digress.
Anyway, Barb's headed to the beach for the weekend, and as she does not have cable there, she generally takes some DVDs with her for entertainment. She and mom came over to see what I had that she might be interested in (Band of Brothers, and the entire series of Wonderfalls this time) and for mom to return a food container of mine and to bring me muffins. Despite what I'm about to tell you, she's a lovely woman and an excellent mother (who brings me muffins).
After Barb has her DVDs in hand, we're chatting a bit before they go back next door. Mom looks down at my carpet and says (and I quote), "Did I tell you I got a new vacuum? You should borrow it." At which point, I was actually speechless because, as a daughter, there's only one real way to interpret this statement, which is,"you need to vacuum your carpet."
Truthfully, I won't debate the need of the carpet to be vacuumed; it could definitely use it, but I hardly need that pointed out to me.
In fairness, it only took her about 10 seconds of my mouth hanging open and Barb laughing for her to realize what she had said, at which point, she told me that's not what she meant. Which actually made me laugh and made Barb laugh even harder.

I do wonder how old we have to be before our mothers stop trying to mother us. In all fairness, I wonder if I do this with my own daughter? I try VERY hard not to, but who knows her interpretation of what I say...and probably what I didn't mean to say.
Hmmm. I think your mother is simply channeling through you to tell me MY carpets need vacuumed!

Are we going to be like that too? I really really don't want to turn into my MOTHER!
