Friday Knitting Blog (04/15/2011)

This week, the socks are in time out. Yarn selection is a big part of that; no matter what I do with that yarn, I'm not happy with it. So I've moved on.

Here's the current sweater so far. I mentioned it in last week's entry which is where the pattern link is, but it's the Hey, Teach from Knitty. I started the first sleeve on Monday and finished Tuesday morning (it's a super quick knit). Here's that sleeve. In the pattern as written, the sleeves are really pretty short, only 2.5 inches from the bottom to the shaping, and that's not a flattering length on this girl. So, I lengthened them to the point that they're just below elbow length. Since this is intended to be a layering piece and I don't like super-tight sleeves, I didn't do any special shaping on them; they should, in an ideal world, be fairly loose at the bottom, but we'll see what happens.

Here's a closer look at the lace pattern. This is a pretty decent representation of the color; it might be a little less orange and a little more "burnt' looking in natural light.

And this is where I am on sleeve #2. I sat knitting on it for a while the morning instead of fucking around on Facebook, and I'm at the point where I'm ready to start the cap shaping, so really almost done with this sleeve.
Then comes the exciting part, in which I decide whether to knit the front and the backs together as 1 large piece breaking for the armhole (or armscye if you want to be fancy ~ I feel no real need to be fancy most of the time). That would guarantee that all the shaping would be the same, but it would also make the rows super long and probably slow me down. There are pros and cons to each, but I also think that the yarn being a cotton and acrylic blend would probably benefit from the stability that seams can give, so chances are that I'll knit the fronts and the back separately and resign myself to an all-day finishing project at the end of that part of the knitting.

Goal for the coming week: Finish sleeve #2 and cast on for the next piece knit with some progress made in the stockinette section.
