Friday Knitting Blog (08/19/2011)

The Double Heelix Socks are done! Here are some pictures. Here  is the link to my (public/shared) project page on Ravelry. That's where the pattern specs, yarn usage, etc. are located.

On the blockers.

On my feet so you can see the little bits of contrast color at the toes and at the top of the cuff.

The obligatory heels together shot.

These socks were a lot of fun to knit, and they made me think about short-row heels (which this technically isn't, but it sort of looks and acts like one) in a new way. When I've made socks with short-row heels in the past, I've gone with the conventional thinking of adding extra stitches to the heel side to give it more depth, but this sock has the gusset working on the instep side of the foot. So the majority of the foot and the leg/cuff are 68 stitches, but where the green meets the blue on either sock, that's 74 stitches in one direction and 75 in the other (provisional cast on and working the other way is why the counts are different). This sock, unlike just about every other sock I've made for myself doesn't pull across the top of my foot. It just fits nicely.

The heel itself is a tricky to knit, but once you've gotten past that (which took me about 1-1/2 to 2 hours of knitting time for each), it's a pretty straightforward stockinette sock, excellent for working on while watching TV once you've gotten past the fiddly bits.

Up next, I'll be winding for Kai-Mei and winding and doing gauge work for Honeybee (Ravelry links for both patterns) and seeing what progress I can make. It is, however, our obligatory couple of weeks of summer here in the PNW (just when we had given up on the whole shebang), so I may spend a little less time knitting and a little more outside until it starts raining again.

BTW: Regarding Kitteh Blog, this is a post I put on Facebook the other day about that very subject.

The thing about Kitteh Blog is that, while I love my cats and find them hugely entertaining, the pictures all kind of look the same after a while. When they're being super hilarious or adorable, I never have camera at the ready. I think that as a weekly feature, kitteh blog has served its purpose. If they do show up in the blog in the future, it's going to be much more random.

So kitteh blog won't be a regular feature anymore. I know you're sad; I am a little too, but believe me, the kittehs are actually much happier.
