Killer Raccoons

Apparently there are killer raccoons on the west side of Olympia where I live. They've killed at least 10 cats in the neighborhood and attacked more. They've also attacked small dogs and the people who are trying to save their pets. One poor woman had to take rabies shots because they bit her. I read the story in the paper ealier in the week, and I was naturally horrified. Today there's a followup story about how many hits the Olympian website has had on that story and people's responses. (Shooting is out as it's illegal to fire a gun within city limits, same with most hunting, Tazer, etc.) I can't recall such an uproar over raccoons before, although I suppose it's possible that I haven't been paying attention.

Stories like that are why I like living in a town that has it's own daily paper. Living in the burbs and reading the paper from the big city or a weekly local just isn't quite the same. Quite frankly, most of the time, I don't care what's going on in Seattle unless I actually have plans to go there, but I do like to know what's happening around here, which neighborhoods the sex offenders have plans to live in, the kind of stuff that makes small city living.

Note: It's a small city, not a small town. There's a difference, it's called downtown.
