Curl Up and Dye?

So, the hair is very short. And Very Gray. So gray, in fact, that it requires capitalization, because I have never been this gray, or I've been this gray but haven't seen it until now. I've also not been without at least some artificial color on my hair since I was 20. Eek!

Anyway, thus far my friends and family seem to be divided into 3 camps. Tony is alone in his camp, liking the cut (which is actually universal, yay! because I love it, too) but he's noncomittal about the color. He asked me yesterday, "what do you want from me, mom?" and my honest answer had to be that I don't know. Other than Tony, the reaction to the gray is mixed. Some love it and don't think I should color. Others are less enamored of the color and think I should cover it up.

I'm on the fence. Trying desperately not to run my life by committee, because I did that for years, and it's a tremendously difficult habit to break, but I am soliciting opinions.

So what say you, Gray or Nay? Own the color or fight Mother Nature? Yes, I'm a comment whore, soliciting away. Sue me. It's not like I'm the first comment whore you've encountered (probably not even the first one today).

ok.. Here's my opinion. Are you ready? This is the truthful Annie friend. Invest in your hair. It's healthy and gorgeous. It's the only accessory you wear everyday. I know salons cost a fortune; but you're worth every single penny.

You pick a color that makes you FEEL sexy! (gray, silver, blonde, brown with highlights); but give yourself a treat and have Gene Juarez or a pro do it for you. Gene Juarez charges $65 for color/gloss and maybe a little extra for highlights. I just get the color- no highlights.

I've had my hair colored by me and Walmart specials! which was a disaster. I had it colored by two different salons - the color killed my hair. I now only go to Gene Juarez. It looks natural and blends well. It doesn't give me the "colored" look.

Try it once. If you find it's not worth the money, then don't do it again. I think our hair is the last thing we invest in when it really is something we wear everyday and it's probably the first thing people notice about us.

How do I afford it? I think I need my roots done every 12 weeks... If I set aside $6.00 a week, I'll have enough to keep my hair looking au natural - glossy and healthy and I get pampered at the same time with having someone else do it for me. :D ... I also don't mind checking out the cute hunky guys who work there!

Think about what you spend $6.00 a week on and see if your hair is worth $6.00 per week. If not, and I have a second income in my household.. so, I have a little help... but when I reduced my hours, I felt guilty about it and stopped getting it colored. But, then I realized I deserved one hour of pampering every 12 weeks and fuck the checkbook... He can spend one less day at the golf course. Right? LOL

Plus, I don't have anything but t-shirts in my closet, no shoes and two pairs of Levi's.

My two cents. I think you look FAB Connie - it's your smile and fun spirit that makes all of you glow and sparkle.. truly. The hair is just icing on the sugarless skinny cake!

Dye it green to match your Shamrock tatoo! That would be awesome!!!!

I don't do make up etc so my hair is the thing I try to make sure looks pretty good. Works for me.

Hie Connie,
Came over from Annie's blog.
You look great with the new hair cut :)
I suggest brown for the colour.

Had second thoughts Connie. I read what your friends on MySpace say and they think the gray ages you.

If this is true, then don't let the gray stay. Why? Because you don't ACT old. You are a energetic 30 something and so, I'll vote on the light brown/taupe too. I mean the last thing you want is for people to assume you're mature.

LOL!!!!!!! oh, had me a belly laugh there. You are anything but old.

Nothing too dark though because I think it will contrast too hard on your soft whiter skin. LOL! White girl !!!!.... If you had olive skin like me, black or dark brown might be the ticket.

Thanks for all your commentary; it's been most helpful.

Janice, it's not a shamrock, it's a 4-leaf clover commemorating my English grandmother; no Irish symbols for us. I have decided to keep my hair color within the realm of somewhat natural hair colors, and I'm not sure how green would look with my complexion. Maybe if I had olive skin . . .

I am going to color it, mostly because I do think that it ages me to be gray. Not sure when, but probably next week after I get paid. There's no way I can afford to have someone do it for me, after all I'm a single mom, no more child support and all, plus it grows so fast that I'd be at the salon monthly. So I'm going to be looking at colors every time I'm out and about in the next little bit and come up with something. I am leaning toward the lighter end of the brownish spectrum.

And a big thanks to wuching and Poobearee; I'm guessing this is your first visit to Connieland. Hope you enjoyed your trip.

...kay....annie sent us here....to give frank comments about yr hair. if anything pisses you off....it's annie's fault *pointing accusing finger at annie*. hahaha

i definitely like the cut..it speaks more for your character. the long one seems more subservient, a little less daring to speak out. the colour....not so. because of the gray mixed in it....makes you look older and not as funky. either go with blond (or blond with black) or totally white. makes more of a statement...and i think you're you're not the type that wants to blend into the wallpaper. not black though....that'll be plain boring.

it's nice to be natural and dare to live up to what's really you....but not when it's not the most attractive alternative. look good, feel good.

it's annie's fault!!! *pointing at annie again*
