My Friday Night Knitting Project

So, as I've blogged before, the idea of knitting socks has started to intrigue me. Even before I got on Ravelry (last week), my interest was piqued, and since I've been there looking at what people are making, I'm just all over the sock idea. I knew that I was interested in using Magic Loop, and I wanted to do toe up and not cuff down.

So last night, although I didn't have exactly the needle size or yarn called for, I got the Magic Loop booklet and decided to make the Simple Baby sock pattern. The pictures below are what I came up with.

On this first picture, you can see that on this side, I have a couple of visible increases. They look like small holes.

On this next picture, you can see that while my increases look better, the heel part is a little shaky. Or that's what I see anyway.

This is my first actual project with this Magic Loop. I've made a couple of tubes, but nothing that's recognizable really.

To be fair, it should be noted that this project is not what I'd call useful in any way. From toe tip to the end of the heel it measures about 4 inches, and there are no babies living here. So it's destined to be a sock with no mate, but I will keep it proudly as my first sock because I learned a lot on this project. I learned a whole new way to cast on for the toe. I learned a couple of new ways to make increases (which will get less visible as I work on them), and most impressive of all (at least to me), I did my first run at short-row shaping and turned the heel without tears. I knew how to do short-row shaping in theory, but this was my first time trying it out for real.

Now that I think about it, I might need to make the mate to this sock so I can practice more on the things that needed work.

Then someday I'll be able to tackle 2 socks on 1 needle at the same time with the Magic Loop. It's good to have goals, right?

P.S. I'm not making socks for anyone but myself. Not even the kids are getting socks out of me for a long time to come.
