Thursday Kitteh Blog (04/09/2009)

Well, here we are back on our regularly scheduled day. I do seem to have been forgiven by my girls for the spaying last week. It took a couple of days for them to start warming back up to me (they looked for Amanda the second I brought them home from the vet's office, presumably because they thought she'd protect them), but Meredith started sitting on my lap while I was reading the other night, and this morning, they both decided to come and bother me while I'm on the internet. Just like old times.

Here's Stash checking me out from under the table (OK it's a TV tray) that's next to the desk. She always looks mad when I try to take her picture, but I'm OK with that. Some of us (me included) just have faces that, when we're in repose, look like we're pissed when we're actually fine.

I like this shot a lot. I just held the camera up underneath Meredith and got her while she was teasing Stash. I think it came out well, especially considering I couldn't see whether or not she was even in the frame.

And here's Stash again, preparing to jump off the desk. At this point, she was contemplating the amount of push off she'd need to make it from the desk to the bed, which is about 4 feet away. I'm pleased to report that she made it with about a foot to spare.

The first couple of days after the spaying, the girls were very quiet, not eating much, and certainly not climbing or jumping. By the weekend, though, they were back to jumping up on the counters and on the window ledges, looking outside, and on Sunday and Monday, when it was around 70 degrees here, they were in kitteh heaven just lying around wherever there was a ray of sun to be found.

I've been looking at toilet training options for cats today. It has been decided, mostly because Amanda freaked out at the idea of them going out, that they'll remain indoor kittehs. Mostly I'm OK with that, because they will be safer, but I really hate the litter box and I need an alternative to the dining room placement. There's really no room in the bathrooms, and in the laundry room the perfect space is occupied by the water heater, which can't easily be moved (I sort of wonder why it's not in the garage, but there's nothing I can do about that right now).

I'd be most interested in knowing if any of my readers has any experience with the cat toilet training devices that are out there, particularly Litter Quitter or CitiKitty, both of which seem to mixed, although mostly positive, reviews at Amazon.

I've never tried an alternative to litter, but I do agree with the outside spazzing from personal experience (runaways, fights with wild animals/tree branches in the eye, roofclimbing...etc). I do like lidded litter boxes, I have a dome one I got at Petsmart which is what has always been in either bedroom (now) or our apt living room and you really don't smell the litter except cleaning times. I hate the bathroom one, but they use that one more and it doesn't have a hood/lid because it was bought without knowing exactly what size space it would need and is currently between the people potty and the sink cabinets. I've seen cute ones at Bed, Bath and Beyond (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=16122688&RN=2107&) But don't know that I could spend that on it. Let me know how the potting training goes if you decide, though I think my cats are too old to learn that now.

I'm glad to hear they were back to normal at a decent rate!
