Happy New Year or Whatever

Yesterday I was antsy and wanted to get out of the house for a while. So I want to A's room and said, "let's get out of here." I did not say, "take me, Garth," but she answered, "Where? I'm low on gas and you need a jacket." Which cracked me up. It was my Kim Basinger moment, I guess. I liked feeling like Kim Basinger, but was sad that the feeling came without the sense memory of naked Alec Baldwin (back when they were first married and he was thinner, although he still looks good now).

Moments like that make me feel like I've done my pop culture teaching job, although sometimes I think I've probably not exposed them to as much music as I should have. That's a side effect of my job. It involves so much listening and paying attention to words that almost the only time I have music going is in my car. Fortunately both the kids have their iPods and get music on their own; they just don't know as much "classic" rock as I think they should, but they probably think they know plenty.

On the other hand, in pop culture territory, we were watching Iron Chef a couple of nights ago, and the challenger was the boyfriend of the actress Jeri Ryan. I referred to her as Seven of Nine, and A didn't know who that was. I told her it was the name of the character she played on Voyager (I think; I didn't actually watch it but I was aware) and that she was Borg. A looked at me like I was crazy, because she didn't know about the Borg. So all this time, whenever I've said "resistance is futile; you will be assimilated," she hasn't gotten it. That makes me sad. Of course, she's not a Star Trek geek, so that's OK. I'm also not really a Trekkie either for that matter, I used to watch The Next Generation but never really got into those that followed, and quite frankly I'm too young to remember the original in anything other than syndication, although I've seen a lot of episodes and most of the movies.

So that's kind of the balance of my pop culture parenting so far, and she's almost 19, so in a lot of ways my job is done.
Wayne's World references? Check.
Star Trek references? Not so much.
Music references? Mostly check.

Happy New Year.

Jeri Ryan is class personified. Her character, 7 of 9 was the most interesting of all the Star Trek actors. Stunningly beautiful, forceful acting in her confrontations with the Caption' she was dynamic yet very unerable.
