Went into my normal Saturday morning coffee place today. The place I go literally every Saturday morning and get the same thing, a latte made with nonfat milk and sugar-free caramel syrup (don't judge me). Today I started to order, and the barista, one I don't recognize since my "regular" barista just had a baby and is on maternity leave, tells me, "actually, we're out of nonfat." So I told her that in that case, I didn't want anything, and I left.
She seemed shocked by this, I don't know if it was that I was upset (although I didn't yell) or that I was unwilling to have a milk substitute. Let's investigate, shall we?
1. Whole milk makes me gag with its fatness on my tongue, and 2% is just as bad.
2. Soy milk is, I'm pretty convinced, not good for you unless you're lactose intolerant, so that's out. I'm working the unfermented soy out of my diet.
3. I don't like the taste of rice milk.
4. You're a coffee/bagel store that's right next door to Weight Watchers! For the love of whatever you find holy, by and large, the Weight Watchers crowd wants nonfat milk, especially if they're trying to feel virtuous on meeting day.
By the way, on a day when I don't get to have coffee until almost 11 a.m., I'm bound to be a little cranky, but I did drive through the coffee stand on my way home and got a lovely, larger size, nonfat latte with sugar-free gingerbread syrup (which the other place never has) and paid less for a larger drink. Sometimes I wonder why I don't go there more often.

I remember you asking the other barista what you were going to do when she was on maternity leave. I guess now we know.
This is the 3rd week without her, and it's been OK until now. I'll give them one more shot before I take my business elsewhere on a permanent basis.
IMO you have a right to be pissed. I can't STAND going into a place that sells something specific - i.e. coffee - and them not having what's on the menu. I mean, it's pretty simple; you are a coffee house, you ensure that you stock what you need to make coffee. People don't go there for the pretty wallpaper.
Oy.
